The Art of Building is a full-service design and construction company based in Rhinebeck, New York.
We thoughtfully approach every project as a technically pragmatic but creative endeavor that - above all else - should be an expression of each owner's unique personality. For our clients, we serve as a single point-of-contact providing streamlined planning & design expertise, along with comprehensive construction management services. Regardless of project size, or scope, we believe in timeless, artistic, and contextually-sensitive design solutions that can be durably and pragmatically built.

Planning & Design
We provide holistic planning and design services before construction even starts. Whether you have a clear inspiration you're trying bring into reality or you need guidance in determining what that project might be, we’re here to help. As early as the initial property search, we’ll shepherd the project through the design, permitting, and approval processes. We also have a background in development, which enables us to craft efficient strategies to address complex site challenges, including underground utilities, septic systems, wells, swimming pools, fences, driveways, drainage and grading.
New Construction
Approximately 50% of our work is new construction. We enjoy building homes and also other structures, large and small. Some of our favorite projects have been playhouses, garden follies, vegetable gardens, saunas, and dining pavilions.
Renovations & Additions
Projects which reimagine and elevate existing homes are as important to us as new construction. Older homes often have hidden potential that can be unlocked through creative problem solving. Although many renovations focus on enhancing the design or look of a building, renovations might also focus on subtle quality-of-life improvements that ensure a home will endure comfortably through time, including things like structural repairs, water exclusion, and the modernization of outdated building systems. Regardless of whether the work is visible or hidden, we enjoy finding efficient and effective solutions to the challenges your home may present.
Historic Restoration
Our historic restoration expertise ranges from the simplest restoration and re-creation of historic details, to fully documented restorations of homes, barns, and even castles.
Sites & Landscapes
Without consideration of the site that a building sits on, even a carefully considered structure may feel incomplete and not in harmony with its context. And so, sites are important to us. Many of our stand-alone and comprehensive projects have involved site elements such as stone walls, patios, swimming pools and other water and health-related amenities.
Health and Fitness Amenities
The buildings we live in are an extension of our lifestyles. Dear to our hearts are the many health-related amenities we've been able to program, design, and build. These include saunas, cold-plunge pools, hot tubs, home gyms, nature trails, and pickleball courts.
