Mountain View Road – Modern Renovation of Mid-Century Ranch

April 1 2017

The house was a standard brick 1960’s brick ranch that was nicely sited on a secluded parcel but was itself almost completely devoid of charm.  The one appealing element of the house was its long, low form that was accentuated by its oversized garage.  The renovation was conceived as a two phase project that would take place over several years.  In phase one, the living areas would be completely redone and the bedrooms and bathrooms would be saved for phase two a few years later.

The living space was a dark and boxy space with low ceilings and uncomfortably separated interior volumes.  The new plan was to remove all interior walls and replace them with three metal posts.  The design motif was meant to be thoroughly modern with a slight touch of an industrial aesthetic.  The metal posts and metal fireplace surround gave the industrial feel while the oak cabinetry of the casements and windows and doors are executed without additional framing, making the window detail thoroughly modern and minimal.  A new grand stairwell was added to access the basement and an odd space with a raised floor was reconfigured to be a wine cellar with glass window.  The kitchen was conceived with a massive island that would be design’s focal point and the center of the house’s activity.
