At the time of acquisition this turn-of-the-century home was in a state of near ruin. Although structurally sound, the house had to be stripped to its shell, reconfigured and rebuilt. Taking advantage of its secluded location and dramatic location on top of a small hill, its owners wanted to build a bright and inviting country home. Working on a tight budget, the entire project revolved around certain key design anchors: high-quality windows to replicate the originals, simple but crisply executed kitchen and bathroom finish-work and the celebration of certain components of original house. Original doors were kept and refinished; chimney bricks were exposed and prominently featured and the original stairway was left intact with its decades-old patina. The result was a distinctly modern sensibility that was grounded in the building’s historical components.
